My secret tips on buying domains

I read a lot of forums and have not seen these tips mentioned. So, here are some ways to find and/or sell quality domain names. All the resources are free so you can get started right away.

1. Go to http://www.wsmdomains.com/help/expireddaily.html and download any list. Keep in mind theĀ  5-day grace period after a domain expires. Many registrars do this to determine if the domain has any residual traffic. With this in mind, pick a list at least 6 days old or older. Otherwise, you get little to no results.

2. Download a free domain filter. I have my own tools but I wouldn’t recommend them to novices. However, the tool you use should allow you to import the list from step 1 (thousands of items), set up filters of all sorts (e.g. length, prefix, suffix), and do finds and sorting. Also, you want to be able to add a list of words which can be found anywhere in the domain name.

Example: .com names are worth the most. So, if you filter out all non-”.com” domains, only the .com names are left in your list.

Example 2: Domain names with the word “foreclosure” sell well. So, you would add “foreclosure” to the filter.

3. After filtering the list, I copy 500 names at a time to http://www.moniker.com/domains/batch_reg.jsp . This is a bulk domain registration tool. It’s likely there are others, but this is the one I use. It supports up to 500 names, which is plenty. Now, you can see which names are available and pick the names you want from that list.

Here are some words that are good for domains (to use in your filter):

free
car
cheap
discount
love
foreclosure

If you look at what sells best on eBay, you can easily see other valuable words to add to your filter list.
