Don't forget companies like HostOnce.com. I found my service with them to be degrading considerably (more than a day of downtime in a month over a period of months, general slow access to their servers, poor customer service when asked about it, etc.) When I asked to transfer my domain they said OK and told me to expect a code. This code never came. Further e-mails I sent were ignored. In the end I had to go to ICANN who provided me with details of where HostOnce purchased their domain names from and I was able to take control of it directly (after having to prove my identity) and transfer it to a new host.

Essentially, make sure you do your research when you choose a new host. Some can be as bad through non-action (possibly a deliberate attempt to keep me paying).

These are great tips and good things to keep in mind. It would've been better if the person writing it would have proof-read it, though.
