Oh GoDaddy, Why Do You Bother Me?
It seems GoDaddy is up to their funny business again.
It looks like they closed down one of my major sites. Of course, they still want to charge me for hosting but they have seized the domain name. Well, what happened, you ask? Here’s the story.
One of my sites shortens URLs. I really don’t do anything with it, but the scam artists, SPAMMERS, and drug sellers seem to love this site. They use it to mask links to their websites. They must be using my URL in their SPAM so people will click the link.
Well, you see the problem in this for me. When the authorities try to trace these guys, they see my URL first. It seems the Australian National Police sent a complaint to GoDaddy about my domain, saying my site was being used for SPAM.
Now, to be fair, GoDaddy gave me fair warning. They sent me an email saying my site was being abused and to do something about it. Instead of responding to them, I just started eliminating all the redirects.
Bad move!
A week later, GoDaddy suspends the domain (and thus the site). Now they say they want $199 for me to keep the domain with them or $75 to transfer it. Now GoDaddy is running the scam! They say the cost is for their administrative expenses of dealing with the complaint (yeah, right!).
I get the impression if they had received a reply from me immediately after the first email, this would not be an issue. So, in this case, GoDaddy isn’t too bad. It’s a lesson learned.
Just remember, when you get an email from you registrar regarding your domain, respond immediately!
