How do you promote a social networking site?
1. Put a “send to a friend” from on some of your pages. Don’t have them click on a link that goes to the form. You want it in front of their faces.
2. As usual, do click ads. Start with as many search engines as you can. Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, Ask, LookSmart….
3. You also have pay-per-click services:
TextLinkAds, TrafficSwarm, CasaleMedia.com, FastClick, BurstMedia, FC, TribalFusion, CJ, Azoogle, CPA Empire, GlobalInteractive, AdBrite, Adengage, RealMedia, Kontera, Avnads, ValueClick, Vibrant, RealTechNetwork, Dotomi….

Talk about controversial stuff, and get opinions:
“45-year-old man marries a 17-year-old.”
Advertise such subjects all over the place. Both on and offline. Put flyers all over the place, especially near schools.
“Putting On A Condom In 3 Seconds?!”
“A Neat Parlor Trick Revealed For Getting On The First Page Of Google.”
The subject about the high school girl quitting to do her website would be a good flyer to tack up near schools.
“17-Year-Old Quits School, Pisses Mom Off, But Makes Over A Million Dollars. Mom Is No Longer Pissed.”
Get word of mouth going with them!
Don’t forget DIGG, and other such sites.
Also write articles on such subjects, and submit them to as many content sites as you can.
Go to other Networks to see what are the popular subjects. Follow suite.
5. Put in cool videos teenagers and young adults like.
6. Put in a online stereo that gives your users an option to play, or not.
7. Put in cool and funny pictures.
8. Get a MySpace page going, and have some of the things there as you do in your Network, and then tell all your “friends” to check out your new Network.
There’s more, but the main things you have to push is the “send to friend” forms, and thinking of really cool, really unusual, really life-enhancing subjects for your Network, and then advertising them both on and offline.
Word of mouth and advertising are the two biggest methods the big sites used to get big. You just need to know, HOW, to advertise.
