Are .info domains any good?

Some associate .info with spam. They believe it is used by websites that are disreputable or SPAM-oriented, and therefore need to be avoided for a website. But, is this belief well-founded?

Consider, that…

there are good websites using .com there are naughty websites using .com
there are good websites using .biz there are naughty websites using .biz
there are good websites using .info there are naughty websites using .info

TLD is not a good indicator of intent.

Quite a few people “feel” .info and .biz are used more for illegal activity and spamming.

So, lets take an actual example. Let’s look at sites linked to spams over 24hours. (The data is a few weeks old but a casual glance at today’s data, it shows much the same pattern)

The top 100 by volume

94 .com’s
5 .cn’s
1 .tw’s

With regard to the sample size, the top spammer had 1344 spams referencing the .com domain. Incidentally the .com’s had a clean sweep of the top 24 most frequently used domains. So, does this mean people who own .com domains are more likely to spam?

Basically, .info is the second most popular domain used on the web today. This is due to its low cost. For spammers, cost is not a big issue and they want the legitimacy that many believe the .com domain carries. So, if you decide to use .info, don’t worry about any perception issues if you plan to create a website with good value to its visitors.
