Adsense tips to increase your earnings
I’ve experimented with many different money-making strategies. These ranged from affiliate networks to selling products to Adsense to direct ad deals on my site. Here’s some things which helped me increase click through rate (CTR).
I had quite poor CTR, so having a 200% increase was rather easy and didn’t require much work.
If you already have a good CTR, you may already be using these tips. For those with a poor CTR, get ready for some nice increases.
Here are the adsense strategies which worked for me
BLUE LINKS
Many times I’ve heard blue links are the best. You know what? They are.
Simply, blue links work. I’m almost convinced you can try putting different ad blending coloring to get better CTR. Yet, ultimately, BLUE LINKS perform best (#0000FF blue links).
I have tried black, white, red etc. However, only the red was working decently - but it still didn’t get as many clicks as blue links - so, blue it is.
GET RID OF (MANY) IMAGES
Obviously, since my blog is not focused on adsense ads, I have some image banners on the site. If I were to use Adsense more, some images would need to be removed.
Basically, the more images you have, the less people clicks on your ads. If you try putting images next to your ads, you might get banned. So, it’s not such a good idea.
When testing my site’s CTR, I removed images - and it helped increase click through rates.
KNOW HOW TRAFFIC FINDS YOU
I have seen websites which don’t have google Adsense ads on its most recent blog post pages. If a blog post is published, at least one or two days passed before adsense ads appeared.
It seems this tactic is meant to cater to your loyal audience. Give them ad-free use (since they probably won’t click often anyway), and concentrate on getting people to click who visit once in a while (coming from search engines or other sites).
You could think about targeting more heavy ads to “random surfers”, while balancing the ads for your most recent content.
NO AD BORDERS
If you want to get more clicks. DO NOT use borders.
BLEND YOUR ADS
It’s seems obvious… but many don’t do this. Do it now to increase CTR. Without going into details, if you have a green background for your site, an ad unit with the same background color performs better than any other background.
CREATE ACCURATE CHANNEL NAMES
If you don’t know what ad channels are, find out with the Google Adsense help files SOON!
You MUST use channels.
Don’t use channel names like “blue_ad” or “big_page_ad”. Those are confusing.
Instead, use page, placement, content, or ad description names. For example,
- Homepage5LinkUnitRedLinks728×15
- BlogPageBelowHeaderBlueLinks336×280
- BlogPageAfterPostBlackLinksFirst338×280
- BlogPageAfterPostBlueLinksFirst338×280
From there, it’s easier to see whether Blue or Black links work better for blog post pages, or anywhere else on my site.
This type of naming shows you immediately the kind of ads you have. Google updates the adsense channel tracking from time-to-time, so pay attention to what they’re doing!
TEST! TEST! TEST!
Even after saying “no to borders”, you really need to TEST to be sure. Every website is different. Remember, you may easily get +1% CTR with some simple changes. No matter how sounds the advice you always have to see how it performs with your content, your traffic, and your placement.
IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE - DO WHAT WORKS
The best free method for improving CTR is to see what others are doing. You may come across people & sites making a good adsense income. Look at what they do and try it with your site. Remember to test, experiment, and tweak until you are happy with the results.
It’s not rocket science.
MY BEST AD SPOTS FOR BLOGS
I tried ad units on the left side, but they didn’t work as well as ad slots “inside” the text content.
What’s surprised me, was the performance of a LINK UNIT at the top of the site. These links produced good income, though CTR wasn’t high.
Before the link unit, there was a 728×90 banner in the top header. It worked too, so once again, you need to do some testing.
Last but not least, I put a couple of ads (try using only 1 if you already have a banner with one 336×280 slot) at the end of a blog article. These worked “okay” too.
So, get out there and increase your CTR with these tips. And, remember, TEST, TEST, TEST!
